The Winery
In Albarola since 1796: thirty organically farmed hectares and one hundred and thirty thousand bottles a year, with the patience of a family that has worked here for generations.
Two centuries of vines,
one family
The family of the Barattieri counts settled on the Albarola agricultural estate in 1796, following the marriage of a Barattieri to a member of the Trevani family, Parma nobility with properties in the Val Nure. Established as a traditional mixed-crop estate, over time it saw viticulture take an ever more central role.
The modern founder of the winery was Count Otto Barattieri who, after commissioning soil core samples and detailed analyses, firmly chose the path of quality viticulture. Today the family carries that choice forward in the same spirit: innovating without betraying.
- 1796
The Barattieri settle in Albarola, on the first hills of the Val Nure, following the marriage with the Trevani family.
- 1824
Production of the Vin Santo begins: today one of the most historic wines of the Colli Piacentini, kept alive by the Mother established in 1823.
- 1800s
In the second half of the century the «international varieties» reach Albarola: Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.
- 1970
Count Otto Barattieri, after soil surveys and analyses, gives the estate its modern winemaking vocation.
- Today
The family farms 30 hectares organically and produces 130,000 bottles a year.
Two pillars, one idea of wine
«We want to make wines for everyone, suited to everyone. Good things are felt at once: they need no explaining or interpreting, they are immediate.»
The second pillar is the will to make the wines our land can truly give, from the grapes we grow, starting from the agronomic and climatic character of these hills: not submitting to the territory, but shaping its potential, producing at the very best of its ability.
Vineyards with a name
and a story
In Albarola every vineyard has a name, and sometimes it takes it from the family who tended it. Ours are called Berganzina, with the Rastello vineyard planted in 1962 and the Montesprello, the highest and stoniest; Vignazzo, which has been catching the sun behind the winery for forty years; and the Albarola vineyards, around the Villa.
Thirty organically farmed hectares, between 200 and 350 metres, facing south-east: white varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia di Candia Aromatica and Ortrugo; red varieties Barbera, Bonarda, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. An average yield of 65 quintals per hectare and vineyards averaging over twenty-five years of age: this is where the excellence of our wines is born.
Where time
works for us
Under the roofs of the estate, the finest bunches of Malvasia di Candia Aromatica rest on racks for a long, naturally ventilated drying. Then the pressing in a vertical basket press, the small casks (some from the nineteenth century) and the Mother established in 1823.
Ten years later, that harvest becomes our Vin Santo: in production since 1824, one of the most historic wines of the Colli Piacentini. The wine that makes patience worth learning.
